Choosing the Right Swimming Pool Material

As leading pool builders in San Diego, we design and build all types of pools from fiberglass and gunite to ceramic and vinyl. Whether
you’re interested in a low-maintenance yet attractive pool or you want a show-stopping mosaic swimming pool, we can help.
Your pool builder will show you samples of materials and help choose options that will complement each other and achieve the
look you want. Here’s a quick overview of the types of materials we use.
Fiberglass Swimming Pools

Fiberglass Swimming Pools

Fiberglass pools come in many shapes and sizes. These pre-molded fiberglass shells will be delivered and installed in your yard in a single piece. Fiberglass pools can be installed with fiber optic lighting for unforgettable night swimming or it can be heated.
Unlike gunite, fiberglass pools are fast and easy to install. Depending on excavation and lighting needs, these pools can be installed in just days. If you want a low-maintenance pool, fiberglass is a good choice because it never needs to be resurfaced or have the liner replaced.
Tile Swimming Pools

Tile Swimming Pools

Tile is a classic option in San Diego with an elegant and high-end appearance. Tile became popular in the 1950s with the creation of unique treated pool tiles that can withstand constant exposure to heavily treated water. Tiles are a beautiful and practical way to add aesthetic appeal to the concrete walls of a pool or add a water feature.
You may want a pool with tile accents along the coping, a waterline strip of tile, or on steps leading into the pool. We can even design a custom pool with glass tile lining the entire inside of the pool rather than plaster.
Vinyl Swimming Pools

Vinyl Swimming Pools

Vinyl pools are made with a sand or cement floor. A custom sheet of vinyl is installed between the structure and the water. Vinyl liner pools are popular for many reasons. This type of pool is affordable with excellent flexibility.
You won’t need to worry about a vinyl liner pool cracking like concrete. There are also limitless styles, shapes, and colors available to customize the appearance of your pool.

Gunite Swimming Pools

A gunite pool is made by excavating an area and assembling a framework of rebar secured with wire. Once the grid is in place, a heavy coating of gunite is applied. Gunite is a mixture of sand and cement. The gunite will be smoothed and, after curing, a finish will be applied.
Swimming pool builders prefer gunite for many reasons. This highly durable material does not require the use of wood like concrete. It can be created in virtually any shape you like.
With a gunite pool, you can choose from many finishes that coordinate with your backyard design. Along with plaster finishes, you can even choose a finish made from glass or pebbles for a one-of-a-kind pool. We can even attach unique features to your gunite pool like a waterfall or custom steps.

What are some factors to consider when building a pool?
There are many things you should consider before having a pool designed and built. Your budget will likely be the first consideration. A custom pool can be costly and it shouldn’t be considered an investment. If your budget is limited, consider the features that are most important to you.
You may also want to research the types of pools you can have installed. Custom above ground pools are a good option if you have limited space. In this case, a deck can be built around the pool. In-ground pools are more popular in San Diego but require more space. With an in-ground pool, you can choose any type of shape you like. There are also many materials to choose from such as vinyl, concrete, and fiberglass. The type of material you choose will affect the pool’s appearance, cost, and long-term maintenance.
We also recommend thinking about how you want to use your pool. Some homeowners add a pool mostly as an architectural feature of their home. Others install a pool that will mainly be used by kids. Do you want a relaxing retreat or a place to entertain and host parties? Considering your plans will help your pool builders create a pool landscape design that will fit with your needs.

How long does it take to build a custom pool?
This will depend on the size and type of the pool and the scope of the project. It all starts with a meeting with your custom pool builder. Our designer will go over your plans for your space and what you envision. We will also visit your property to assess the site. Your designer will create a pool design that will be ready for your approval or adjustments in about 1 to 2 weeks. The next step is securing building permits. This may take as little as two weeks or as long as two months or more.
The actual construction of your pool is usually pretty quick and may take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the type of pool. If you choose a gunite pool, the concrete must set for 28 days before a plaster coating is applied. Custom pools can also take longer because they are not made with pre-built fiberglass shells. This is an important consideration if you’re building
a pool with a novelty or custom shape. Building your pool patio will take an additional one to two weeks.
How do I select the right pool builder?
When it comes to custom pools in San Diego, you want a custom pool builder who is up to the task. There’s a lot more to a beautiful pool than digging a hole; swimming pool design is a complex matter. The design of your pool must fit with local code and it should complement your landscape and home. When it’s time to begin excavation and installation of the pool, you want to know that the work will be done well.
We recommend considering a few pool builders in San Diego before making your decision. You should only work with a company that is insured and licensed. Ask the swimming pool builders how long they have been in business and whether they can provide references. Ideally, the builder should have years of experience installing the type of pool you want. If you want a pool that is part of a larger outdoor living area, it’s worth it to look into companies that offer landscape design services as well.

After contacting references or looking into reviews of the company, find out what type of warranty or guarantee they offer. Ask about the duration of the builder’s warranty on their work and what this warranty covers.
Find out what will happen if repairs are needed while your pool is under warranty.
Finally, you should always have a good feeling about the builder you have chosen.
Quality San Diego pool builders should inspire confidence, answer any questions you have, and explain all aspects of the project.
